本日は、私が小学生時代に少し住んでいた国、シンガポールについて執筆させて頂きます。
東京23区、琵琶湖、淡路島とほぼ同じ大きさと呼ばれているシンガポール。
みなさんは、シンガポールの人々は何の宗教を信仰し、公用語は何でしょう？と聞かれたとき、どう答えますか？
知っている方もいると思いますが、シンガポールは多民族国家であり、家系や民族、個人により信仰している宗教も多種多様です。
ですので、仏教、キリスト教、イスラム教、ヒンドゥー教…と様々ですが、その中でも現地に住むシンガポール人全体では仏教を信仰する割合が一番多いです。
そして、シンガポールにはマレー語、中国語、英語、タミール語の4つの公用語があります。オフィシャルな場面では英語が使用されますが、シンガポールの国語（National Language）はマレー語ですので国歌はマレー語で書かれています。
このような多様な文化・言語は私のような外国人でも触れる機会が多かったです。当時私が滞在していた時、ショッピングモールや街に行くとサリーを身にまとっているインド系の女性であったり、頭にトゥドゥンというスカーフを巻いているマレー系の女性を多く見かけ、言語も英語に限らず様々な言葉が飛び交っていました。
お祝い事もその宗教ごとに国全体で行われ、中華系のライオンダンスやドラゴンダンス。イスラム教のハリラヤプアサと呼ばれるお祭り。全身を鉄の針で刺し豪華な飾りを支えながら長い道のりを歩くヒンドゥー教のお祭りであるタイプーサム。（これは始め見たときの衝撃がすごかったです。）
本当に様々な祭りごとが1年間で行われ、私も実際の目で何度も見ました。
当時の私はまだ幼かったこともあり、その光景を素直に受け入れ、さらにはそれがあたりまえと思って生活をしていました。ですので、なぜこのように多様な文化が混在しているのか？それぞれの宗教を信仰している人たちにどういう特徴があるのか？そもそもシンガポールとはどういう国か？について正直何も知りませんでした。
以前、小西先生が「海外に住んでいたことがある、と言うのならその国の文化・宗教・政治政策など国に関することを知っておくべきだ」と仰っていました。それを聞いたとき私はまさにその通りだと思ったと同時に、いかに自分がシンガポールという国に関して無知識かということを思い知らされました。
こういったことがありもっと自分のゆかりのある国を知るためにも、今後の研究を深めていきたいと思います。

I would like to talk about Singapore, a country where I lived when I was elementary student.
People say Singapore is almost same area as the twenty-three wards of Tokyo, Lake Biwa, and Awajishima. I have one question, if you asked that what religion people in Singapore believes and what is the official language?, hoe do you answer?
I think some people may know, Singapore is a multi-ethnic country, and religions believed by family lines, ethnic groups, and individuals are also diverse. So, it varies from Buddhism, Christianity, Islamism, Hinduism ... but among them the Singaporean people who live locally have the most proportion of Buddhist religion.

It has four official languages in Malay, Chinese, English and Tamil in Singapore. English is used in the official scene, but since the language of Singapore (national language) is Malay, the national anthem is written Malay.
Many such foreign cultures and languages were touched by foreigners like me. When I was staying at that time, when I went to a shopping mall or town, I had an Indian woman wearing Surrey, I saw a lot of Male's women wearing Tudun and a scarf in my head, the language is also Words like words restricted to English were flaring.
In those days I was still young, accepting that sight so obediently, and even though I thought that was the norm, I was living. So why are there such diverse cultures mixed together? What are the characteristics of people who believe in each religion? First of all what is Singapore? I did not know anything about it.
Before Mrs. Konishi said if you say that you lived abroad, you should know something about the country such as culture, religion, political policy of the country. When I heard that, I thought that was exactly right.
