Studying abroad in Canada

Work away

Work away

“He who hesitates is lost”

Hello.
My name is Nao Morii and I am a senior in Professor Konishi’s class.
I am currently studying abroad in Canada having begun in May this year (2022).
I am really  grateful to Professor Konishi for allowing me to study abroad along with my fellow classmates in helping me to continue the seminar online.
Allow me to share my study experience abroad with you all.
My study-plan is from May 2022 and will continue until January 2023. It began in Vancouver, Canada and will end in Eastern Ontario, Canada. I attended a language school in Vancouver for the first 3 months while at the same time I worked  part-time at Starbucks and a restaurant. Currently I am living in Eastern Ontario, Canada through a program called Work away.

I had hoped to do an exchange program when I was a sophomore, but the course was suddenly canceled due to COVID-19. Normally a person might think that this is bad. However, I was very fortunate some time after this to receive a job offer from a prominent international company.

As for my English language skills: I feel that my speaking and listening skills have improved in the areas of listening, reading, speaking, and writing. This is especially apparent as it was happening in the process of my part-time jobs in Vancouver. At first when I started working, there were many times when I could not communicate or keep up with the conversations with English speaking people.I felt very handycaped which led me to the decision to participate in a program called Workaway. I believed that my English would improve in this program because the emphasis in this program is cultural exchange. That is how I came to be in Eastern Ontario, Canada.

Work away is a program in which you live with a host family and help your host for a few hours a day in exchange for accommodations and meals. In this setting you have a lot of opportunities to practice your English. My host is a Canadian family, who have other Workaway program participants in the home. They include people from many cultures including Brazil, Germany and Mexico. There were many opportunities to see my English get corrected and therefore improve

At first, when I was introduced to the idea of Workaway I felt very apprehensive.  However, I was able to overcome my apprehension with the knowledge that taking on this challenge was good because it would take me out of my comfort-zone into a future of greater possibilities.

Workaway has not only been about improving my English language skills. I have also met numerous new people who have become an important part of my life in helping me towards working with people of various nationalities. I believe this will help me in my career at the international company where I will be employed. I have also acquired new and deeper values that have enriched my life allowing me to relate to many different people in a different setting. My life has definitely been enriched through coming to Canada.

Finally, I would like to recount the following words that I received from my Workaway host mother:

"He who hesitates is lost."
