皆さまは普段、スターバックスコーヒーへ行かれますか？
私は月に2，3度、集中して課題をしたり、本を読む際に足を運んでいます。
スターバックスは、季節限定メニューなど、魅力的なメニューの数々はもちろんのこと、2020年までに世界中の店舗でプラスチックストローの使用を廃止することを発表するなど、環境への取り組みや社会貢献活動に力を入れている企業としてもよく知られています。
さて、そんなスターバックスの、とある取り組みについてご紹介いたします。
タイトルにもある、“世界一静かなスターバックス”と呼ばれる店舗が、マレーシア、クアラルンプールの町の一角にあるのをご存知でしょうか？
私が今年、マレーシアで5ヵ月間国際ボランティア活動をしていた際に、幸運にも実際に訪れることができました。
“世界一静かな”とうたわれる理由は、お店のスタッフのほとんどが聴覚障がいを持つ方々だからです。
スタッフ同士のコミュニケーションはもちろん、接客も手話で行われます。この店舗は、スターバックスがろう者通訳協会と共同で、聴覚障がい者に雇用機会を提供するため開店された、ほぼ聴覚障がい者のみで営業する世界初の店舗なのです。
私はこれまで、聴覚にハンディキャップをもった人と話す機会が無かったのですが、しっかり目を合わせて、ジェスチャーと、表情豊かに会話してくださる店員さんを見て、いかに自分の普段のコミュニケーションの取り方が不十分だったか思い知らされました。
私たちは知らず知らずのうちに言葉に頼るあまり、ジェスチャーや表情など、もっとコミュニケーションを豊かにできるものを見落としているのかもしれません。
店内のいたるところに、「Proudly Served by Deaf Partner」(誇りをもって聴覚障がい者のスタッフによって提供される) という一文が書かれていました。
今日の社会において、多様性の尊重が重要視されつつありますが、まだまだ障がいを抱えた人への理解は不十分だと思います。ハンディキャップを抱えた人も、誰しもが、それぞれ個性を活かして、自分らしく、誇りをもって活躍できる場所がもっと増えればなと強く思いました。

“The most silent Starbucks Coffee all over the world!?”

Do you usually go to Starbucks Coffee?
I go to Starbucks Coffee a couple of times a month to read a book or to do a task.
Starbucks is well known as a company that is focusing on environmental initiatives and social contribution activities, such as announcing that they will abolish the use of plastic straw by 2020. Today, I will introduce some effort of Starbucks.
As written in title, do you know a store called "The most silent Starbucks Coffee all over the world " is in Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur.?
Fortunately, I could visit there when I was doing international volunteer activities for 5 month in Malaysia this year.
The reason why it called “The most silent in the world” is that most of the shop staff are hearing impaired. Communication between staff as well as customer service is done in sign language. This store is the first store in the world to open almost only with hearing disabilities. Starbucks cooperates with the Deaf interpreting association and opened to provide employment opportunities for hearing impaired people.
I have never had the opportunity to talk with a person who has a handicap to hearing so far. They talked to me by looking at my eyes, using gestures and so expressive. I was made aware of how my usual way of communicating was inadequate. Because we rely on words, perhaps, we are overlooking gestures and facial expressions that can enrich our communication more.
The sentence, "Proudly Served by Deaf Partner" was written everywhere in the store.
In today's society, respect for diversity is emphasizing importance, but I think that understanding for disabilities is not enough.
I strongly felt that people with a handicap and everyone should make use of their individuality, and be active and proud. Such opportunities should increase more.
