今回は夏季休暇中に訪れたスリランカで感じたことについて書こうと思います。
皆さんは、「スリランカ」と聞いてどのようなイメージが浮かびますか？
渡航前の私も含め、これ！といったイメージがない人がほとんどなのではないかと思います。
それもそのはず、スリランカを訪れている日本人観光客数は他のアジア圏の国と比較するととても少ないのです。
しかしスリランカ国内には、8つもある世界遺産や日本も多く輸入している紅茶など、魅力的なものも多くあります。
その中でも特に私が魅力を感じたのは、宗教の多様性です。
いたるところに鎮座している、華やかに飾り付けられたブッダ。
街を歩く、色とりどりの美しいサリーを着た女性。
チャペルがあるかと思えば、道の向かい側には巨大なモスク。
スリランカの人々の暮らしには、多様な宗教が深く根付いています。
では、実際にどのような宗教の人々が暮らしているのでしょうか。
私個人としてはインドとも近いのでイスラム教のイメージが強かったのですが、なんと仏教徒が70%も占めており、次いでヒンドゥ教やイスラム教、キリスト教が信仰されているそうです。
ある日、コロンボ市内でトゥクトゥクを捕まえようとしていると、「やあ、君は中国から来たの？それとも日本？」と話しかけてきたスリランカ人がいました。
「日本人だよ」と返すと、彼は唐突に、「君たちって何を信仰してるの？宗教は何？」と聞いてきました。
私は以前から異文化や宗教に関心があり、それなりに調べたり訪れたりもしていましたが、自分の宗教なんて考えたこともありませんでした。
日本人の多くは無宗教と呼ばれていることを話すと、彼は信じられないというように首を振りました。
憲法で信仰の自由が認められているにもかかわらず、私たち日本人の多くは日常生活の中で特定の宗教を意識することは稀です。
一方スリランカでは、決まった時間にお祈りをしたり、毎日民族衣装を着たり、当たり前のようにお酒や食べ物のルールを守ったり、彼らの生活のいたるところに信仰がありました。
宗教が身近にあることで生活が成り立っている様子を肌で感じ、自分たちと何が違うんだろう、と疑問が浮かびました。
彼らは神に救われているのだろうか。
毎日同じ服で嫌にならないのだろうか。
どんなに忙しい時でもお祈りするのだろうか。
並べてみるとほんの些細な疑問ですが、これらを理解しない限り、「スリランカを知っている」とは言えないように感じます。
もっと彼らや自分を理解するために、秋学期は異文化や宗教に触れられる授業を多く履修することにしました。
これまで何となく持っていた関心が、今後の研究テーマにもなりそうです。

I’m Kaho Onoue, a 3rd year student in Konishi seminar.
I would like to talk about what I experienced and felt in Sri Lanka that I stayed for 2 weeks during this summer vacation.
What is your image of Sri Lanka?
Same as me before visited there, most of you might say that there is nothing in particular.
That is obvious, the number of visitors from Japan is fewer than other Asian countries.
However, there are a lot of attractiveness such as 8 beautiful world heritages and famous tea that Japanese people always enjoy.
I was especially interested in diversity of religions.
There are so many statues of Buddha decollated with flowers and colorful clothes.
And women with beautiful saris are always walking around there.
You can also find a church and a big mosque across the street.
I saw many kinds of religions that well-established in each life.
Then, which kinds of religions do Sri Lankan people believe in?
Actually, before I visited there, my image of Sri Lankan religion is Islam, but there are 70% of Buddhists, 12% of Hindus, and less than 10% of Muslims and Christians.
One day, when I tried to take a tuk-tuk in Colombo, and one Sri Lankan man asked me, “Hey, where are you from? China? Japan?”.
I answered, “Yes I’m from Japan,” then he asked me again, “What is your religion? What do you believe in?”
I have never thought about my own religion and gods even though I have been interested in diversity of religions and cultures for few years, and I sometimes search about them or visit religious places.
I told him about Japanese people that they are called non-religious ethic, and he couldn’t understand it.
We are allowed freedom of religious by constitutional law, but most of Japanese people rarely care about them.
On the other hands, people always pray on the exact time, wear traditional dress every day, and follow some rules of meal and alcohol.
Their religious affect their usual life, and I wandered what the differences between us are.
Are they saved by their gods?
Why don’t they hate to wear same kinds of clothes every day?
Do they pray how busy they are?
Those are really small questions that I’m wondering after came back to Japan, but they are exactly important things to understand real Sri Lanka.
I decided to learn more about them in this semester to know them and I.
Now, I think that this kind of thing can be one of the topics to study.
